Trigeminal neuralgia describes a condition that causes chronic pain across one side of the face along the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain. With this condition, the mildest stimulation to your face, even from brushing your teeth, can trigger jolts of intense pain. Reno trigeminal neuralgia treatment, including neurosurgery, is available from Dr. Sina Rajamand and his team of specialists at Battle Born Brain and Spine near Carson City.

The trigeminal nerve begins near the top of the ear and splits into three branches, leading to the eye, cheek and jaw. There are two trigeminal nerves, one on each side of the face. Trigeminal neuralgia pain most commonly affects only one side. This condition occurs when the nerve’s function is disrupted by contact with an artery or vein, or some other object. It can also be caused by a tumor or other disorder that damages the myelin sheath that protects the trigeminal nerve.

Other possible causes can include stroke, multiple sclerosis, facial trauma or surgical injuries that impact the trigeminal nerve.

Carson City Neurosurgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Advanced MRI imaging and other neurological testing are usually sufficient to determine a diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia. Due to the extremely painful symptoms, treatment is always necessary. Conservative treatments can include medications and Botox® injections to reduce reactions and sensations to the trigeminal nerve.

When these are not effective, neurosurgery is necessary. A microvascular decompression can relocate or remove blood vessels that may be pressing on the trigeminal nerve and a cushion placed there to prevent the condition from developing again. A neurectomy to cut part of the trigeminal nerve may also be necessary.

Dr. Rajamand can perform these procedures using true minimally-invasive techniques to reduce surgical risks and speed up recovery. He can explain more about this or other necessary procedures when you schedule an exam and consultation at his medical clinic in Reno.
