Spondylolisthesis is a spinal condition where a vertebra slips out of place and collapses onto the vertebrae below it, exerting pressure on the spine and related nerves. The spine is unstable, allowing the vertebrae to move so much that it shifts out of position. As the affected vertebrae rest on the one below, this pressure can cause pain in the lower back and legs. Dr. Sina Rajamand offers effective spondylolisthesis treatment at Battle Born Brain and Spine in Reno, Nevada.

When spondylolisthesis occurs, the vertebrae in question may have a stress fracture or degenerative condition that allows it to move out of place. Very often, the cartilage between vertebrae wears away between facet joints, and bone regrows in an effort to replace the damaged material. This bone overgrowth is often uneven and makes for instability in this area of the spine.

Some patients feel no pain from their spondylolisthesis, especially when it is caused by a degenerative condition that develops slowly over time. Spondylolisthesis can also be due to abnormal formation in the womb; this is known as congenital spondylolisthesis.

Advanced Spondylolisthesis Surgery Near Carson City

Most cases of spondylolisthesis require minimal treatment, especially if you feel no pain. Common treatments include rest, bracing, physical therapy, chiropractic therapy, OTC medications and facet joint injections. In more severe cases where pain and instability affect daily living, neurosurgery is required for repairs.

Dr. Rajamand specializes in true minimally-invasive surgical techniques when performing neurosurgery that reduces risk and speeds recovery for his patients. Smaller incisions eliminate damage to surrounding tissues and allow for faster healing. When performing surgical repairs for spondylolisthesis, Dr. Rajamand typically recommends spinal decompression and fusion.

Decompression surgery removes the damaged or broken disc and bone from the spine, giving the spinal canal sufficient room and relieving pressure on affected nerves. Spinal fusion surgery connects two adjacent vertebrae that heal into a single bony structure for increased strength and stability in the spine.
