Spinal Cord Stimulation Carson City, NV

Spinal Cord Stimulation is a therapy that masks pain signals to the brain through electrical impulses from an implanted device. The small stimulator, similar to a pacemaker, sends low- or high-frequency pulses that counteract or cancel out the pain signal from elsewhere in the body before it reaches the brain. As part of our spine treatments, Dr. Sina Rajamand offers Spinal Cord Stimulation Therapy at Battle Born Brain and Spine in Reno, Nevada.

The spinal cord stimulator (SCS) device is implanted under the skin, where tiny wires send impulses to the nerve fibers of your spinal cord between the brain and the area that produces pain. Advanced SCS systems can detect changes in body position and activity and automatically adjust to keep pain at a minimum. All SCS systems feature an implanted stimulator, a handheld device for personal control and programmable features. Some have rechargeable batteries while others have implanted batteries that must be replaced every several years.

Spinal Cord Stimulation Therapy does not eliminate the source of your pain. It simply masks the pain, or a significant portion of it, enabling you to live a better life without being controlled by debilitating pain. Some patients do not do well with SCS therapy, finding the sensation unpleasant or not experiencing the needed pain relief.

SCS Therapy Trial, Surgery and Implantation for Pain Relief

When Dr. Rajamand recommends SCS therapy as a treatment to control your chronic pain, he will first allow you to use the device temporarily to test its efficacy. Patients wear a temporary stimulator with implanted wires for a period of time, usually a week, to get a feel for how the system works. The goal is a 50%-70% reduction in pain without undue discomfort from the stimulation therapy.

If you realize a significant reduction in pain with no adverse side effects, Dr. Rajamand can then surgically implant the stimulator for regular use. His team will instruct you on its use and features so you get the best possible effect. You will have scheduled visits periodically at Battle Born Brain and Spine for Dr. Rajamand and his team to check the device, battery levels and your overall condition.

If chronic pain is robbing you of your best life and other pain management therapies have failed, contact Battle Born Brain and Spine in Reno for an exam and consultation with Dr. Rajamand. He can explain more about this therapy, including its risks and benefits.
