An Acoustic Neuroma (also called a vestibular schwannoma) is a slow-growing tumor that usually develops from the Schwann cells covering the vestibular nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain. While not cancerous, this tumor can exert pressure on branches of this main nerve and cause ringing in the ears, hearing loss, unsteadiness, loss of balance and other symptoms. Dr. Sina Rajamand offers Acoustic Neuroma Surgery for patients in Reno and Carson City at Battle Born Brain and Spine.

The signs that this tumor is developing are often hard to detect, as it grows slowly over time. Symptoms may not develop until it has grown to a considerable size, large enough to press on the vestibular nerve or related branches. In some cases, nerves that control facial movements and sensations can be affected, as well as blood vessels or brain structures.

If you begin struggling with dizziness, ringing or hearing loss in one ear, unsteadiness or facial numbness, contact the team at Battle Born Brain and Spine in Reno for a diagnostic evaluation. A hearing test and MRI imaging are usually the means of diagnosing acoustic neuroma. Radiation therapy is usually the first route of treatment. When this is ineffective, surgery is required.

Nevada Vestibular Schwannoma Neurosurgery

Vestibular Schwannoma neurosurgery can be accomplished by using several different techniques, depending on the size and location of the tumor and its proximity to blood vessels and nerves. Dr. Rajamand’s goal is to remove as much of the tumor as possible without affecting nerves, to preserve hearing and other functions.

Neurosurgery to remove an acoustic neuroma, or vestibular schwannoma, can be performed by entering through the inner ear canal or a window in the skull. Dr. Rajamand will determine which approach is best depending on the location and size of the tumor. Both approaches are performed while the patient is under general anesthesia.

If you have been diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma and it is affecting bodily functions like hearing, balance or facial expressions, you need immediate treatment. Contact Battle Born Brain and Spine in Reno to schedule an examination and neurosurgical consultation with Dr. Rajamand. He can determine the best treatment to help you live your best life.
